People need a sense of safety and security. A relaxing home should offer precisely that. In the garden, for example, this can be achieved through sheltered seating areas, privacy screens to block views from neighbouring houses, no hidden or neglected corners, and easily accessible paths.

Seeing is one of the most important senses. A beautiful garden is always a delight to the eye.
For me, however, this element is primarily about the lines of sight.
We will spend most of the year indoors – looking out into the garden rather than being in the garden itself. That is why I take care to design the garden so that, from every seating area inside, there is a soothing view of the greenery and the eye can wander.

To create a sense of well-being, I recommend structuring the garden thoughtfully.

On the one hand, this involves dividing it into different garden spaces that draw you into the garden and allow you to experience each one from a different perspective.
And on the other hand, structure in the sense of clarity and a certain order. This means ensuring that the eye is drawn to beautiful features rather than to a untidy corner. In addition, there can be deliberately wild corners with deadwood or a small wildflower meadow, such as a circular bed measuring just 1.5 metres in the middle of the small lawn.

My studio garden is only about 100 square metres in size and has three large trees and two small ones. Plus several shrubs and a very tall hornbeam hedge on two sides.

An important tip for making a small garden appear larger and adding another dimension is to think vertically as well. By incorporating height into the design – whether through trees or, for example, a pergola covered in climbing plants.

What’s more, trees are simply good for the soul. Relaxing on a garden chair under a tree after a long day’s work and watching the leaves sway gently in the wind – that’s like forest bathing in your own garden.
And let's not forget the privacy screening. Especially in the city.

In light of climate change, too, I recommend being more bold about creating shade with trees. Most of our houses are still built facing south with large windows. Light is important, but the gentle shade cast by deciduous trees cools the house in summer without the need to barricade yourself behind blinds, whilst still letting light in on short winter days.

Water in the garden has (at least) four positive effects on our well-being: firstly, the view of water is calming (even if it is just a small water feature in a clay pot); secondly, the gentle splashing is relaxing; thirdly, it dampens city noise and shields the surroundings; and fourthly, it is an eye-catching feature in the garden. The fifth benefit concerns wildlife and insects, for whom a source of water is vital for survival, particularly during hot summers.
