The scent of flowers, the soft splashing of water, gently swaying grasses - to transform a small outdoor space in the city into a healing, soothing, and restorative garden, I pay close attention to the interplay of elements that appeal to the senses and nourish the soul.

In the coming weeks, I’ll briefly introduce a few of them here.

Today I start with the tactile experiences:
Plants and materials that invites us to touch them, such as the soft leaves of the Alchemilla mollis, from which raindrops roll off; the fluffy flowers of Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’; natural stone on the patio warmed by the sun; or round gravel that’s pleasant to walk on barefoot. Wood, too, in all its forms, offers a pleasant tactile experience. Whether as a building material, as a sculpture - such as a large piece of driftwood - or in its most natural form as a tree whose bark you can run your fingers over.

My studio garden in September. It’s been five months since it was newly built and I planted the perennials, which were tiny at the time. And despite the hot, dry weeks of summer, it’s still a sea of flowers.

What started out as a small, concentional city garden with a lawn has be transformed into my climate-adapted atelier garden. No more lawn - instead more planting beds in organic shapes and various garden spaces within this small area.
A big thank to Olof @gartenraeume and his team, who brought my designs in January to life and fully supported the idea behind it.

After the frost has passed in mid-April I started planting and am happy how green everything has become after just four months.

Two years ago, on my 50th birthday, I fulfilled my dream of starting studying at the London Academy of Garden Design – in the very 'heart' of garden culture. It was a wonderful and intense period, which has now come to an end with the award of my diploma. That’s why things have been a bit quieter here on Instagram.

Yet a lot has been happening outside of my studies too, such as lovely projects and a few trips – including visits to special gardens, like the Royal Danish Kitchen Garden in Gråsten (more on this in my journal on my website)

Can gardens heal? I would say they can be part of a healing process and, above all, they can have a preventive effect, helping us to regulate our nervous system, calm down, find peace, and at the same time create another space for community. Because, in my view, the longing for nature is a basic human need. And our gardens, front gardens, courtyards, balconies and terraces hold a wealth of potential for bringing nature back into our lives.

Können Gärten heilsam sein? Ich würde sagen, sie können Teil eines Heilungsprozesses sein und vor allem können sie präventiv wirken und dafür sorgen, dass wir unser Nervensystem regulieren, herunterfahren, zur Ruhe kommen und gleichzeitig einen weiteren Raum für Gemeinschaft hinzugewinnen. Denn die Sehnsucht nach Natur ist aus meiner Sicht ein menschliches Grundbedürfnis. Und in unseren Gärten, Vorgärten, Innenhöfen, Balkonen und Terrassen steckt jede Menge Potenzial, um sich die Natur zurück in sein Leben zu holen.
