Royal Danish Kitchen Garden at Gråsten Castle

Near Flensburg, in the Danish town of Gravenstein, lies Gråsten Palace, the summer residence of the Danish royal family. The palace grounds include a kitchen garden, opened in 2020 by Queen Margrethe. Since then, the approximately 7,000 square meter kitchen garden has been open to the public.

Upon entering through the thatched-roof show house, which also houses a small shop and a charming café, one is greeted by an oasis of tranquility with its expansive, geometrically laid-out paths and flowerbeds. Each bed features information panels describing the vegetables, fruits, or companion plants grown there.

The kitchen garden still serves to supply the royal family, but anything harvested beyond that is displayed by the greenhouse and can be taken. Products such as herb salt and jam are also made from the grown plants for the shop.

For my studio garden, I brought home a scented pelargonium in a clay pot, which now stands on the terrace.
